Crowcon BESafe

A dual-channel fixed gas detector purpose-built for battery energy storage systems — simultaneously monitoring hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane released during thermal runaway events, with swappable smart sensors, OLED display, and relay output for external alarm or ventilation triggering.

The Crowcon BESafe is a fixed dual-channel gas detector specifically developed for battery backup and energy storage system (BESS) applications — an increasingly critical safety requirement as the Alberta energy sector integrates battery storage into oilfield power infrastructure, renewable energy projects, and remote facilities. During a thermal runaway event, lithium-ion battery systems release hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane — gases that can accumulate rapidly in enclosed energy storage cabinets and create both toxic and explosive hazards. BESafe detects all three with fast, accurate dual-channel simultaneous monitoring, allowing flexible sensor pairing to match the specific risk profile of each installation. Remote smart sensors can be positioned inside cabinets or in hard-to-reach spaces where the controller unit cannot be mounted, while the compact polycarbonate controller fits neatly into space-constrained installations. Swappable pre-calibrated sensor trays require no manufacturer intervention to replace, and built-in sensor life monitoring signals end-of-life before sensor failure. Dual 4-20mA outputs and RS-485 Modbus RTU integrate into existing control systems, while relay outputs can trigger external alarms or ventilation fans directly. With an operating temperature range of -40°C to +75°C and IP65 housing, BESafe is suited to both indoor and outdoor energy storage deployments across Alberta.

Key Features and Benefits
  • Purpose-built for battery energy storage — detects H2, CO, and CH4 released during thermal runaway
  • Dual-channel simultaneous detection — monitor two gases at once with flexible sensor pairing
  • Remote smart sensors — mountable inside cabinets or hard-to-reach spaces independently of the controller
  • Swappable pre-calibrated sensor trays — no manufacturer return required; sensor life indicator monitors and signals end-of-life
  • Non-intrusive remote testing — verify performance without interrupting operations
  • Relay output triggers external alarms or ventilation fans directly — fast automated safety response
  • Dual 4-20mA outputs and RS-485 Modbus RTU — integrates with existing SCADA and control systems
  • High-definition 128x64 OLED display — readable in any lighting condition
  • 85dB audible alarm at 3m; LED status indicators (green/yellow/red) — immediate on-site alerting
  • Compact 175 x 150 x 55mm polycarbonate housing — fits space-constrained energy storage cabinet installations
  • IP65 rated — suitable for harsh indoor and outdoor environments
  • Operating temperature -40°C to +75°C — suited for Alberta climate extremes
  • 3,000 data logs — onboard event history for incident analysis and compliance
  • 2-year warranty on transmitter and sensors
